The Char Dham Yatra is a sacred pilgrimage in Uttarakhand, India, encompassing four revered Hindu temples: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. These temples hold immense religious significance and are considered highly auspicious by devotees. Here’s a description of each destination:

  1. Yamunotri: Located in the westernmost part of Uttarakhand, Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River. The temple dedicated to Goddess Yamuna is nestled amidst picturesque surroundings at an altitude of 3,293 meters (10,804 feet). Devotees undertake a 6-kilometer (3.7 miles) trek from Janki Chatti to reach the temple, passing through serene landscapes and hot water springs.

  2. Gangotri: Situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, Gangotri is the origin of the holy River Ganges. The temple of Gangotri, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, is located at an elevation of 3,100 meters (10,200 feet). Pilgrims travel to Gangotri to seek blessings and take a dip in the holy waters of the Ganges. The scenic beauty of the surrounding mountains and the roaring Bhagirathi River adds to the spiritual aura.

  3. Kedarnath: Perched at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) in the Garhwal Himalayas, Kedarnath is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is believed to have been built by the Pandavas from the epic Mahabharata. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and requires a 16-kilometer (10 miles) trek from Gaurikund. The mesmerizing views of snow-capped peaks and the spiritual ambiance of Kedarnath leave pilgrims awestruck.

  4. Badrinath: Located in the Chamoli district, Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Badrinath Temple, perched at an elevation of 3,133 meters (10,279 feet), is one of the holiest sites in Hinduism. Pilgrims visit Badrinath to seek blessings and pay homage to Lord Vishnu. The temple’s beautiful architecture, surrounded by majestic mountains and the Alaknanda River, adds to its spiritual allure.
